Back to insights

In celebration of International Women’s Day, our recent SWiTCH event gathered a powerful group of women leaders across various industries to discuss their experiences, challenges and the importance of supporting one another. Hosting this event was not only inspiring but also a deeply personal learning experience for me—hearing from such incredible women about their resilience, leadership and the power of community was truly eye-opening. In this blog, I highlight some of the rich discussions, insights and personal experiences that brought to life key themes such as championing each other, resilience and strength.

Opening Reflections: What We Love About Our Work

Each participant shared what they love most about their roles, revealing common themes that resonated deeply within the community:

  • Mentorship: Many speakers expressed their passion for helping other women grow in their careers. One participant noted, “I love giving information to help others secure their futures.”
  • Innovation & digital transformation: Leaders shared their excitement about driving change and being at the forefront of technology. A digital transformation coach highlighted her role in training future managers, underscoring the importance of innovation in leadership.
  • Resilience & adaptability: Participants recounted their experiences overcoming obstacles in male-dominated industries. One leader shared, “Surviving a gruelling 6-month work schedule showed me my true strength.”
  • Networking & collaboration: The significance of building strong professional relationships was emphasised. As one speaker said, “I love meeting people and partnering in a creative and collaborative process.”

Key Moments of Strength

When asked about pivotal moments of resilience, participants shared impactful stories:

  1. Enduring tough schedules: One leader recounted surviving a demanding job after two previous leaders burned out, highlighting her unexpected strength.
  2. Prioritising self-care: Another participant attended a board meeting while in labour, realising later that true strength lies in saying “no” when necessary.
  3. Navigating leadership challenges: A former CEO discussed her unexpected dismissal and how she found strength in rationalising the situation to move forward.
  4. Confronting difficult clients: One leader shared her experience of challenging a dismissive client, illustrating the importance of setting boundaries.

Key Lesson: True strength often comes from recognising self-worth and standing firm in the face of adversity.

Embracing Resilience to Impact Careers

Participants shared stories of how resilience positively impacted their careers, including:

  • Managing high-pressure situations: One speaker balanced three major events in one week, proving her ability to handle stress.
  • Overcoming systemic barriers: A participant discussed how she turned a setback into mentorship for over 150 women, showcasing her determination.
  • Juggling multiple responsibilities: Another leader navigated a demanding role while managing a major relocation and family duties, learning to control what she could.

Key Lesson: Resilience is about adapting to change and finding solutions under pressure.

Advice for Women in Leadership and Future Generations

Key themes emerged around confidence, self-advocacy and challenging biases:

  • Own your achievements: Many women undersell their expertise; it’s crucial to recognise and advocate for their capabilities.
  • Challenge internal biases: Participants encouraged recognising when women hold themselves to different standards than men.
  • Redefine success: Success can mean different things to different people—balancing personal and professional life is essential.
  • Teach respect early: Raising the next generation with an emphasis on respect and equality begins at home.

Key Lesson: Women must advocate for themselves and challenge both internal and external biases.

Final Thoughts

One of the most powerful things about this event was the storytelling. Hearing real experiences—both the wins and the struggles—was a reminder that we’re not alone in this. The conversations were honest, sometimes tough, but always uplifting. We ended with a final note that the word empowerment should be turned on its head, we are ‘powered’. Whether it’s through mentoring, speaking up, or driving change in the workplace, we’re already making an impact.

If you’re curious about the SWiTCH community and want to be part of more conversations like this, I’d love to hear from you. You can connect with me and we can keep the discussion going.
